Overview

"A London Baby: The Story of King Roy" by L.T. Meade is a novel written during the late 19th century. The book revolves around the life of a charming boy named Roy, who, despite being a carpenter's son, is adored and considered a β€œking” due to his innocence and beauty. The narrative delves into themes of love, loss, and the societal struggles of the working class, particularly focusing on the dynamics within Roy's family, including his stern father, John Warden, and his devoted sister, Faith. The opening of this work introduces us to the delightful character of King Roy on a summer evening in Hyde Park. Observed by a narrator, Roy is described in vivid detail, capturing his joyful essence as he enjoys the world around him. Subsequently, the narrative shifts to provide insight into his father, John Warden, a respectable but emotionally detached carpenter, who struggles to express genuine love, particularly towards his daughter, Faith. Following the prologue, the story continues to build with Faith's heartfelt desire to protect and care for her brother, Roy, ultimately revealing her growing awareness of their father's harshness. The stage is set for an emotional exploration of familial love and the heartaches that unfold when innocence is overshadowed by life's harsher realities.
