Summary

"In Morocco" by Edith Wharton is a travel book that takes readers on a trip through early 20th-century Morocco. Wharton describes the culture, buildings, and scenery of a country changing because of European colonization. She shares her adventures in cities such as Tangier, Rabat, and Fez, and shows how important it is to save the traditional ways of life before modernization changes them forever. Her journey shows the challenges of traveling in Morocco as well as the beautiful sights she found, and the story has a somewhat sad tone because the rich culture she is writing about is in danger of disappearing.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
