Overview

"Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 15" by Saint-Simon is a historical account written during the early 18th century, shortly after the regency of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. The work presents an intricate portrayal of the political intrigues and dynamics at the French court during the reign of Louis XIV, particularly focusing on the power struggles and machinations involving prominent figures like Cardinal Dubois and Marechal de Villeroy. The opening portion introduces us to the tension between Cardinal Dubois, who is vying for official recognition as the prime minister, and Marechal de Villeroy, with whom he's embroiled in a bitter conflict. Dubois seeks reconciliation with Villeroy, fearing the consequences of their rivalry, while the latter's unchecked arrogance leads to public insults that escalate tensions. The narrative describes a particularly explosive encounter, featuring heated exchanges that culminate in Villeroy's arrest, setting the stage for Dubois's eventual rise to power and the subsequent turmoil at court. The segment emphasizes the volatile atmosphere of the French political scene and presents a vivid snapshot of the characters involved in these high-stakes games of ambition and influence.
