"Watch-Dogs" by W. W. Jacobs is filled with comedy, displaying village life in a small community and people's quirky behavior interacting with animals. The citizens begin a contest where they vie for a gold watch from Mr. Bunnett, a rich man from London who loves animals. Bob Pretty doesn't care too much, but he gets caught up in the contest. The other villagers get over excited trying to impress Mr. Bunnett while Bob seems relaxed and manipulates the situation. Because Bob keeps his cool, he wins after a funny meeting that involves his dog, Joseph, and Mr. Bunnett. Jacobs cleverly shows how society acts in strange ways through this story.
